Goodbye to Cornwall and Hello to moving forward…

Today marked our last day (at least for this R&D) in Cornwall….and what a great time we have had. We have had great experiences on all 3 of our trips, such as going out fishing, meeting and hearing the stories of fishermen and of course performing a work in progress of the show. Rehearsals this week were somewhat stressful as we set ourselves a high target of adding another 20 minutes of material in 2 days, we had lots of ideas, so really it was just creating the blocking and puppetry for those scenes….haha…right! Classic case of easier said than done….however we did do it, and the audience enjoyed the performance and gave some very good constructive feedback.

So what do we do now! Personally I feel the piece lacks information from the ecologists, Greenpeace and those with strong opinions on the, downside of Trawler fishing as it were…It needs that clarification as we have some knowledge from the fisherman but need to (ahem) anchor it so we have a better understanding therefore giving the audience the clarity.

We have had many email and phone conversations but no meetings. The organisations have been reluctant and the old “I’m too busy card”…In fact In one instance I was surprised that a certain company who come across as a massive organisation is run by 3 sometimes 4 people….But finally we have a meeting arranged by Molly’s magic ways we will get the opportunity to talk about the other views of trawler fishing. We also have the opportunity to go to the fish processing and packing unit that supply all the fish for Waitrose.

Will this generate more material? Will it add a new dimension to the work….probably, but although the piece is gaining more momentum, we need to take time to be careful of what we want to say in the piece. Do we only show it from the fisherman’s point of view? Do we show the equal arguments? Both? I don’t think we have quite answered this yet, we are in need of our Dramaturg to come in and play devil’s advocate…to pin down the creative ideas flying through the room…this will in turn be devised into scenes we can then show in our next work in progress at Deptford Lounge and we can once again gather the thoughts of the audience. The feedback for this project has proved somewhat integral because the audience have challenged the work and asked new questions.

So Cornwall and the people involved there thank you for your research and knowledge and HELLO to moving forward.

Jonagold.

P.s Just as Goofy apple (Luke) mentioned last time about the epic game of Yellow Car….this time he was asleep or watching a documentary on his phone. So Bramley (George) and I, played an epic 3 hour game of naming English football teams from A-Z, (excluding X and Z) e.g. Accrington Stanley, Bolton, Coventry….it was epic because we did the alphabet 6 times round….trust me it’s not easy…we even had to go into the lower league teams and count, Tonbridge Angels and Orpington FC, etc…HARD….every time you couldn’t think of one you lost a point…Final Score Matt 3 George 0…
